FAQ
Here are the questions we get asked most often. If yours isn’t here, call or text Pastor Jim at (518) 949-7679 or send a note through our Plan Your Visit page.
Worship
When and where do you meet?
Sunday worship is at 10:30 AM at 6858 NY-10, Sharon Springs, NY 13459. Parking is right at the church. Come in the front door and someone will point you to a seat.
What are the services like?
Our service follows a historic Reformed order: a call to worship, praise songs that blend traditional hymns with modern worship music, a prayer of confession and assurance of pardon, the reading of God’s law, Scripture, and a sermon that walks verse by verse through a book of the Bible. We confess our faith together from the creeds and the Reformed confessions, share the joys and concerns of the church family, and close with a benediction.
Preaching is expository and direct. We open the Bible and let it speak, and we aim to send you home with something to carry into your week. The service runs a little over an hour.
What should I wear?
Whatever you’ve got on. You’ll see work boots, Sunday best, and everything in between. Nobody is checking.
What about my kids?
Kids are part of the church family and part of the service. Wiggling and noise don’t bother us. Every adult who serves with children at Sharon Reformed is background checked and trained under our Child Protection Policy.
Do you take communion? Can I participate?
Yes, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper regularly. The table is open to baptized believers who have professed faith in Jesus Christ. If that isn’t you yet, you are still glad to be with us. Let the plate pass and keep listening. We would love to talk with you about what the Supper means.
Will I be singled out as a visitor?
No. You won’t be asked to stand, wear a name tag, or say anything. We’ll say hello and hand you a bulletin, and the rest is up to you.
Can I watch online?
Yes. Services are livestreamed and archived on our YouTube channel at youtube.com/@SharonReformedChurch. Sermons are posted with titles and descriptions in more than a dozen languages.
What We Believe
What kind of church is Sharon Reformed?
Sharon Reformed Church is a member congregation of the Alliance of Reformed Churches. We hold to the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of God and to the historic Reformed confessions: the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort, along with the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds.
In plain terms: we believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone.
Are you part of the RCA?
Not anymore. Sharon Reformed Church was part of the Reformed Church in America for most of its history. In October 2024 the congregation joined the Alliance of Reformed Churches, a network of churches committed to the authority of Scripture and the historic Reformed faith. Same building, same confessions, same Lord.
How old is the church?
Sharon Reformed Church was established in 1771, five years before the Declaration of Independence. We are the original Reformed congregation in Sharon and one of the oldest churches in Schoharie County. We take that history seriously, and we take the future more seriously.
What if I’m not a Christian?
Then you are exactly who we hope will walk through the door. You don’t need to clean yourself up, know the songs, or have your questions answered before you come. Bring the questions. Bring the doubts. Nobody will put you on the spot.
What you will find is a church that takes the Bible seriously and talks about Jesus plainly, without pressure or gimmicks. Sit in the back if you like. Come as many Sundays as you want before you decide anything. And if you want to talk one on one, Pastor Jim is a farmer and a retired Marine who has heard just about everything. He’d be glad to sit down with you over coffee, no strings attached.
Church Life
What is the church community like?
Sharon Reformed is a growing church family rooted in the Mohawk and Schoharie Valleys. Our congregation is made up of farmers, veterans, retirees, young families, and folks who drive in from across the region. Many of us were raised in the Reformed tradition; others found it later in life. What holds us together is the Word of God and a shared conviction that the gospel is for our neighbors, not just for us. We are praying for one more. One more family, one more neighbor, one more person who meets Jesus here.
What happens during the week?
By the Book Bible Study meets Monday nights at 6:30 PM at Currytown Reformed Church, 829 NY-162, Sprakers. Bring your Bible and your questions.
Thursday Night Prayer Watch meets Thursdays at 6:30 PM on Zoom, joining our Sharon Springs and Skaneateles church families with missionaries on the field. No one is put on the spot to pray out loud.
Potluck dinner follows worship on the first Sunday of the month. Bring a dish if you can; if you can’t, come anyway. There is always enough.
Table Talk breakfast is the second Sunday of the month, bringing the church family around the table before worship.
How does the church serve the community?
We serve Sharon Springs and the surrounding valleys through Operation Christmas Child with Samaritan’s Purse, support missionaries in Kenya and the Philippines, and stand alongside local veterans and their families. If there is a need in the community, we want to know about it.
Who is the pastor?
Rev. J.G. (Jim) Peck is the Senior Pastor of Sharon Reformed Church and of our second campus, Finger Lakes Reformed Church in Skaneateles. He is a retired veteran with 21 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and New York National Guard, runs a beef and hay farm in Sprakers, and holds a Master of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary. He preaches straight through the Bible, one book at a time.
Do you have a second campus?
Yes. Finger Lakes Reformed Church meets Sundays in Skaneateles, NY and is part of the same church family under the same pastor. Learn more at fingerlakesreformed.org.
